Ridge and Furrow, Mole and Tile

IN this Journaly 20 years ago, W. R. Mead (1954) produced and discussed a map of ridge and furrow in Buckinghamshire. Eleven years later, in collaboration with Harrison and Pannett (1965), he produced a similar map extended to include Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire (part shown in Fig. 1). Sutton (1966) had produced a comparable, though more generalized map, covering Berkshire and Oxfordshire (Fig. 2). As pointed out by Mead and Sutton, among others, there is some uncertainty about the origins of this widespread feature of the English lowlands.
