The Tobacco Necrosis Virus (TNV) is a soil-born virus which causes necrotic local lesions on tobacco or bean leaves (Fig. 1). In 1961, Kassanis and Nixon isolated from the Rothamsted Strain of this virus two polyhedral particles: the normal TNV particle found in other TNV strains, and a smaller particle hitherto not found in other strains. This new particle was incapable of multiplying in the absence of co-infection with TNV, hence the name Satellite Tobacco Necrosis Virus (STNV). Serological studies showed no relationship between the coat proteins of STNV and TNV. Moreover, plants infected with only TNV contained no protein serologically related to STNV protein (Reichmann, 1964).
