This study attempts to trace the pattern of general and specific aspects of marital satisfaction over the family life cycle. Separate questionnaire data were obtained from both husbands and wives in 799 middle class families. The results suggest that husbands and wives are influenced in very different ways by stage of family life cycle experiences. In general, family life cycle experiences were more associated with marital satisfaction for wives than husbands. Especially in the subjective area of feelings about marital interaction, the dependent children stages of the family life cycle were associated with negative evaluations of the marriage by the wife.
