Vertebrate-host-seeking Aedes abserratus, Aedes canadensis, Aedes stimulans, and Aedes triseriatus females were collected in Connecticut, USA, during 1980 and 1981 and were dissected to determine numbers of retained eggs and prevalence of resorption and follicular degeneration. Based on ovarian examinations of 490 parous mosquitoes, females with retained eggs ranged from 10.2% of 128 Ae. canadensis to 15.8% of 120 Ae. stimulans. The average number of relict eggs per female varied from 3.4 to 4.5. Resorption of retained eggs and degeneration of newly formed follicles occurred concomitantly in the same ovarioles of 32 females, but because of relatively low prevalence, formation of “aberrant dilatations” due to these processes was considered uncommon.
