Aspects of Repression in the Regulation of Enzyme Synthesis: Pathway-Wide Control and Enzyme-Specific Response

This paper is primarily concerned with repression and induction phenomena associated with the arginine pathway of Escherichia coli: in particular, the control of the formation of three enzymes (acetylornithine δ-transaminase, acetylornithinase, and ornithine transcarbamylase) and of a permease (acetylornithine permease) is considered. More general discussions of the regulation of enzyme formation have recently been presented in reviews by Pardee (1961) and by the present writer (Vogel, 1961).
