Hæmoglobin levels and hæmatocrit values of 1638 males and 1693 females were measured in a population survey. The mean hæmoglobin level for males was 15·68 gm/100 ml, and for females 14·3 gm/100 ml. The mean hæmatocrit for males was 46·2%, and for females 42·9%. Ninety-one subjects were found to have low hæmoglobin levels; of these, 46 males had a value below 13·5 gm/100 ml, and 45 females had a value below 11·5 gm/100 ml. One woman was found to have polycythæmia rubra vera; three women had thalassæmia minor; and one man was considered to have hereditary spherocytosis.
