The aim of factor rotation is to produce a solution having structure; here the main methods of rotation currently available are reviewed. Rotation may be for exploratory or confirmatory purposes. Exploratory studies typically involve two stages, the production of an initial solution, and then its rotation to a solution having simple structure. The initial solution is based upon an explanatory criterion. This paper includes an example of such a study. Confirmatory studies involve the examination of the fit of data to a model with specified parameters.
