ABSTRACT We assessed depressive symptomatology and its correlates in a sample of Chinese American elderly residing in a mid-western city. A structured questionnaire was developed for the project and administered by trained bilingual interviewers. In our community-dwelling sample (N = 45), aged 59 to 89 years, 20.0% had clinically significant depressive symptoms. Life satisfaction, social support, health status, functional status, number of years present in America, level of acculturation, and command of the English language were all found to be inversely related to depressive symptoms.
