A 68040-compatible microprocessor, optimized for portable applications, is presented. While maintaining the same speed and performance as its predecessor, this implementation achieves a 70% reduction in power consumption (before considering static power management techniques). The innovative low-power features and the cost/performance/power trade-offs of the design are discussed. A new metric is defined to compare the relative merit of quiescent states in microprocessors.
