The use of increasingly advanced mathematical techniques in theoretical physics means that there must be a constant reappraisal of the kind of mathematical education we require our physics graduates to have. Perhaps the most difficult problem facing the teacher is to decide on what level of sophistication the mathematical ideas should be conveyed.
