The excitement aroused by the publication of Shannon's statistical theory of communication has had some ten years in which to die down whereas the discrepancy between the amount of information which can be transmitted over a practical channel and the upper theoretical limit seems still to be as great as ever. It is to be hoped, therefore, that by familiarizing the present generation of students with the concepts of information theory, we shall see more rapid progress in the future.
