Healthcare professionals worldwide participate in continuing professional development (CPD) to remain competent in practice, to ensure they provide high-quality care to patients. Globally, CPD systems have evolved at different rates resulting in variation in structure, requirements, and oversight. In some countries, CPD has moved from single profession designs and formal didactic methods of delivery to educational models that are innovative, dynamic, and learnercentric. other countries, CPD is a neglected part of the healthcare education continuum. This article provides a global on the evolution of CPD over the past 20 years, and identifies opportunities for the future.
