The article deals with the changes in the semantic structure of the German phraseological units, which were marked as polysemantic by lexicographers in 1970. The results obtained by comparing these data with the data of modern lexicographic sources are considered in formal and content aspects. For the first time the author attempts to systematize semantic changes of phraseological units by the material of the German language. The paper identifies and interprets such phenomena as the archaization of the original image of phraseology and the archaization of the way of rethinking. The work also describes the tendency of the modern German lexicography to combine meaningful characteristics that previously served as a criterion for distinguishing phraseological units’ meanings. In this regard, the problem of phraseological units’ eurysemy is touched upon. The interpretation of the fundamental difference between a eurysemic phraseological unit and a eurysemic word is suggested.
