The manufacturing sector has been identified as a major contributor to global carbon emission. The future product demands are linked to the manufacturing and consumption of goods and services which allow sustainable development and reduction of carbon footprint. While some manufacturing organizations have come to terms with the reality of carbon emission, a large proportion of organizations are still searching for how to reduce carbon emissions within their delivery process. This article provides a review of the literature on energy use, carbon emission, supply chain and its management, competitive advantage in the supply chain and how emissions are being reduced. In the overall, this article takes an integrated view into the supply chain of manufacturing sectors in order to highlight the drivers and barriers of carbon-efficient practices.
