Abstract Obesity is an important health problem for women, affecting 30% of middle-aged Caucasian women and 60% of middle-aged African—American women. Consequently, this article reviews recent research findings related to the problem of obesity and its health implications. The major focus of the article is on new directions in the treatment and prevention of obesity. The implications of the recent research on obesity for clinical practice are discussed, and recommendations are made for future research and clinical practice.
