Implementing group investigation (GI) learning model combined with socio scientific issue (SSI) to improve students’ problem solving skills in XI grade IPA 4 SMAN 2 Malang

Problem-solving skills in students’ daily lives are needed in the teaching and learning process in the classroom. These skills can be done in group learning by discussing controversial issues in the social scientific community. This study aims to find out how implementing Group Investigation (GI) learning model combined with Socio Scientific Issue (SSI) improve students’ Problem-solving skills in XI grade IPA 4 SMAN 2 Malang. The type of research used was Classroom Action Research. The research data is in the form of quantitative and qualitative data. The Quantitative data show the results of the average value of N-gain problem-solving skills of 0.57 (medium criteria) and 1.1 (high criteria) in cycle I and cycle II, respectively. The Qualitative data show that the application of this model facilitated students in reviewing and evaluating the truth of facts or myths originating from controversial issues, trained students to conduct independent investigations on understanding concepts related to science material by presenting solution recommendation ideas, planed learning actions and applying these actions in learning in the classroom independently, foster motivation and self-confidence of students in their opinions, argue and open to each other in describing the insights they have. Students were also trained to solve problems using a scientific approach as indicated by the fulfilment of stages of problem-solving skills in making the right decisions. The conclusion of the overall results shows that the application of the SSI integrated GI learning improved conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills of the students.
