Abstract Two methods of measuring canopy density from the ground, the moosehorn method and the vertical dot method, were investigated. It was found that (a) the moosehorn yields canopy density estimates which are not significantly biased: (b) the number of vertical dot readings depends only on the canopy density of the stand: the number of moosehorn readings necessary depends on the canopy density and the crown distribution of the stand; (c) the moosehorn method is more precise than the vertical dot method; (d) the efficiency of the moosehorn method is roughly equal to that of the vertical dot method.
