Article1 November 1953MORTALITY RATES IN ACUTE MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION. II. A PROPOSED METHOD FOR MEASURING QUANTITATIVELY SEVERITY OF ILLNESS ON ADMISSION TO THE HOSPITALSIDNEY SCHNUR, M.D., F.A.C.P.SIDNEY SCHNUR, M.D., F.A.C.P.Author, Article, and Disclosure Informationhttps://doi.org/10.7326/0003-4819-39-5-1018 SectionsAboutPDF ToolsAdd to favoritesDownload CitationsTrack CitationsPermissions ShareFacebookTwitterLinkedInRedditEmail ExcerptIn any clinical investigation whose purpose is to gauge the effect of therapy upon the mortality rate, it is axiomatic that treated and control groups must first be equivalent in all factors affecting prognosis if the study is to yield sound and valid conclusions. This would be especially true in a disease such as acute myocardial infarction, in which the mortality rate has been reported to range from 8 per cent1to 78 per cent.2Unfortunately, the large number of prognostic factors in this disease has made it difficult to determine whether two groups are in fact equal. The solution...Bibliography1. MasterJaffeDack AMHLS: The treatment and immediate prognosis of coronary artery thrombosis, Am. Heart J. 12: 549, 1936. CrossrefGoogle Scholar2.
