The evolution of Kharkiv urban greening system from the middle of 19th century to the early 1990s was studied in the paper. It was determined that Kharkiv urban greening system was formed in 4 stages: the 1st stage: laying out of the first public parks and urban landscaping from the middle of 17th to the early 20th century; the 2nd stage: the genesis of Kharkiv urban greening system on the basis of socialist ideology (1917-1950); the 3rd stage: the consistent development of Kharkiv urban greening system from 1950 -1980; the 4th stage: the formation of a continuous wedge-shaped urban greening system (1980-1991). It was established that by 2000 all planned targets for urban greening in Kharkiv which were proposed by master plan in 1966 had been implemented, and the actual rate of green areas amounted 19.2 m2 per capita (taking into account residential areas landscaping) with the population of 1.47 million. Thus, the consistent wedge-shaped urban greening system had been consistently implemented for more than 60 years. The development and landscaping of territories reserved for greenery, the creation of new parks, squares and gardens, despite the changes in urban theories and paradigms took place. In 2000 the existing system of urban greening in Kharkiv in terms of uniformity of distribution in the city, continuity and connection with the surrounding suburban green belt should be recognized as a significant achievement of the theory and practice of domestic urban development.
