In the article, based on the results of a sample survey of the population of preretirement age in the Yaroslavl region of the Russian Federation, a cohort analysis of the economic situation of this age group is carried out. The influence of the age and the historical period of socialization on the professional characteristics and the sectoral structure of employment of preretirees at the moment is investigated. Among the factors that determine the position of a given age cohort in the economic space, the following are considered: the time of choosing a profession in the conditions of the Soviet planned economy; the time of joining the group of the economically active population, which for this age cohort coincided with the beginning of a radical reform of the economy; significant changes in the labor market, which determined the main trends in the transformation of the socio-professional structure and economic well-being of Russian society.
