The rapidity with which the literature on the electrophysiology of the retina has increased in the last few years makes this book a particularly valuable one for those interested in this field. Written by one of the foremost experimenters in electrophysiology, it brings up to date both his own work and that of others in the field since 1947, the date of his previous book, entitled "Sensory Mechanisms of the Retina," published by the Oxford University Press. This volume is not a book for the clinical ophthalmologist, but for those who wish to keep abreast of the important advances in physiology of the retina it can be highly recommended. The author believes that the impulses which travel up the optic nerve fibers are initiated and kept up by a generator potential of depolarization, which, either directly or by electronic transfer along the fine nerve terminals, depolarizes the nerve.
