This article examines some problems encountered when reading works by Bakhtin and the Bakhtin Circle in English and French translation. The correlation between translation issues and interpretation, although largely accepted, is little discussed in Bakhtin scholarship. An overview of literature discussing translation of some problematic terms and concepts (krugozor, stanovlenie, sobytie, vyskazyvanie, etc.) is followed by close reading from two different published translations of "Problems of Dostoevsky's Poetics" in French, providing examples to help in assessing the theoretical choices structuring translation decisions and demonstrating how they affect Bakhtin's texts. Bakhtin's own reflections on translation are examined, focusing on his understanding of the relationship between languages and cultures.
