An overlap integral between many-electron wave functions perturbed with local potentials at different sites is obtained in a closed form as a function of the phase shift and the distance between two impurities. We use the result to determine the reduction of the transfer motion of a charge particle in metals when screened by conduction electrons. The condition for the localization of the charged particle is derived. As an example, the two-d-hole bound state in resonant photoemission from transition metals is discussed.
