The objective of this study is to document the characteristics of citations in French and German fine arts monographs. Three hundred ninety citations were randomly selected from 155 monographs published between 1982 and 1990 and indexed in the "Répertoire international de la littérature de l'art (RILA)". Citations were classified as to source type; primary or secondary source; language; date; and the author's motivation for making the citation. While books are the principal source cited, manuscripts are more heavily cited than in most humanities fields. The greatest number of citations is to works published in the last twenty years, but there is a more even distribution of citations to earlier decades than in most disciplines.
