Evaporation measurements were obtained for a pond at Auburn, Alabama, that was lined to prevent seepage and fitted with a barrier to divert runoff, and for an adjacent class-A evaporation pan during 1 year (November 1982-October 1983). A chloride budget for the pond and a laboratory permeability test revealed that the pond did not seep. Pan coefficients for estimating pond evaporation from a class-A pan ranged from 0.72 in March to 0.90 in September; the average was 0.81. Monthly pond evaporation in millimeters (Y) also may be estimated by the equation: [Ŷ} = -2.755 + 0.848X, where X = monthly class-A pan evaporation in millimeters and for which r2= 0.995. If class-A pan evaporation data are not available, monthly pond evaporation in millimeters may be estimated from monthly mean surface water temperatures in degrees Celsius (X) by the equation: Ŷ = -9.940 + 5.039X, for which r2 = 0.884.
