The authors conducted a retrospective chart review to investigate breast cancer patients' physiological or chronological age determined vigor with which they were treated. When co-morbid conditions, functional, tumor stage, and the type and size of treating hospital were, age itself was statistically significant in determining treatment. older patients (70 years and older) received less than optimal treatment did younger ones (50 to 69 years). The authors conclude that age bias contribute to a less favorable prognosis than can be achieved using recommended therapy. (KIE abstract)
