Functions which are continuous in a closed triangulated region and behave like polynomials in each triangle of the triangulation are important in the finite element method. The present paper is concerned with certain local aspects of functions of this type, relating to their existence, uniqueness, construction and approximation properties. The results are obtained for the general case of n-dimensional space.
