Vol. 269, p. 11133 Additional tests have been conducted to ascertain the nature of the differences between the software provided by PTI to operate their Photoscan II system and the software developed in the Schwartz laboratory. We reported that the PTI system produced nonlinear ratios under conditions of low signal and high background. Further analysis shows that these effects are attributable to high noise, which gives rise to standard deviations approximately 4 times higher than for our software. There does not appear to be any inherent nonlinearity in the PTI software apart from statistical effects due to the noise.
