The manual is printed in two volumes. Volume I includes an introduction, the list of categories and the tabular list of inclusions. Volume II is the alphabetical index to the list and is to be used as a tool for coding medical records and death certificates. The number following each entry indicates the number under which the disease is reportable. Without this volume it is difficult for the average code clerk to achieve uniformity and speed in the assignment of code numbers to their proper statistical category. To aid the coder, adjectival designations of the disease have frequently been placed on the same line as the noun, indicating that the nominal or adjectival form may appear interchangeably in medical terminology.
