A review of the literature reveals that as many as 50% of American veterans of the Vietnam War suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD). Nearly 25% of the Vietnam veterans have encountered serious legal difficulties after their return from the war. PTSD is being used to an ever increasing extent in the courtroom to explain criminal behaviors ranging from violent crimes such as murder and assault, to non-violent offenses such as drug dealing and tax evasion. This paper presents a general framework for understanding the relationship of PTSD to criminal behavior and for performing a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation of the combat veteran.
