Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is a common morbidity experienced in premature infants, having the major etiology of surfactant deficiency (1). This deficiency was described nearly 60 years ago and treatment of preterm infants with exogenous surfactant preparations has been one of the most important milestones in neonatology (2).
