This paper presents a mathematical model of a Particle Impact Damper (PID) and a Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) boring bar for determining the displacement amplitude at their frst natural frequency. The experiments demonstrate that, on the edge of the dynamic stability, the PID boring bar can operate at a higher range of overhangs than the TMD boring bar in which the length over diameter ratio (L/D) is between 3 to 8 in comparison with the TMD 4.5 to 7.75. The results of these analyses and numerical simulations are compared with direct measurements obtained through an internal turning of a hardened steel specimen.
