Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a highly incapacitating condition that has a significant impact on a large number of individuals worldwide, representing the greatest burden of disease among mental and neurological disorders. 1In China, MDD has been projected to be the second leading cause of years lived with disability. 2 Regrettably, over 30% of those who undergo major depressive episodes fail to attain antidepressant remission even after undergoing multiple attempts with antidepressants. 3This form of depression, known as treatmentresistant depression (TRD), is linked to premature mortality, including suicide. 4 In psychiatry, TRD represents a major challenge.
