This paper designs a new phase winding module structure of the permanent-magnet machine in order to improve fault-tolerant capability while reducing torque ripple. In this design, phase winding module and tooth shoes shift are combined. Firstly, the phase winding module structure is introduced, and the design method is presented in detail. Secondly, the tooth shoes of the phase winding module structure are shifted symmetrically to reduce torque ripple. Thirdly, the theoretical comparisons of the conventional and proposed structures are investigated from the perspective of winding function, magnetomotive force harmonics, inductance and torque ripple suppression. Fourthly, the advantages of the proposed structure in improving the fault-tolerant capability and suppressing the torque ripple are verified by finite element method. Finally, a 3-phase permanent magnet machine and the proposed machine are manufactured. The tests on the two prototype machines are carried out for verification.
