Freedom has always been an important theme in Western philosophy, and it seems to have eternal charm for humanity.From Ancient Greece to the Medieval period, and even to thinkers such as Rousseau, Kant, and Sartre, they have conducted in-depth and detailed discussions on the issue of freedom. Augustine of Hippo's exploration of freedom mainly began with the origin of evil and how people can obtain a legitimate life. He believed that due to the universal influence of sin, people cannot choose the true good and can only rely on the grace of God. John Macquarrie analyzed from the perspective of human existence, pointing out the negation and creativity of freedom, and understood the image of God in humans as freedom. Macquarrie endowed freedom with a different meaning, through which humans can participate in God's creation and shape their own humanity. Although their theories have shortcomings, influenced by historical background and philosophical framework factors, the diverse ideas and perspectives they provide can bring a lot of inspiration and enlightenment for future research.
