Increasing ICU survival rates, combined with an aging global population, place more patients at risk each year for the development of PICS. There is considerable variability in the reported rates of PICS, with some studies reporting the incidence to be as high as one in two ICU survivors in the United States (Rev Bras Ter Intensiva 2022;34: 380-5).
