The article highlights the history of the development and origins of the psycholinguistic approach at Bryansk State University named after acad. I.G. Petrovsky, as well as research problems. The main scientific object in the works of Bryansk psycholinguists is an individual’s verbal and cognitive activity in the context of classroom bilingualism, which is due to the specifics of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, where most research is carried out. The topics of research conducted at different times have been diverse and covered such problems as: the mediative role of a mental image in the processes of comprehending and translating a literary text; features of temporal semantics and temporal experience in different linguistic and cultural environments; the influence of psychological factors on foreign language vocabulary acquisition; the strategic nature of grammatical error in connection with the dynamics of the development of an intermediate language, and others.
