The adoption of The Children (Equal Protection from Assault) (Scotland) Bill (2019) aimed at reducing corporal punishment of children by their parents by educating parents about the potential consequences of using corporal punishment and the alternative forms of principle (Scottish Parliament, 2018). This paper will discuss how attitudes towards 'corporal punishment' have changed from acceptance to rejection and how researchers studied the results of physical punishment on children and found no evidence to support the idea that it leads to any beneficial outcomes. Many nations have laws that forbid corporal punishment of children, but does legislation reduce corporal punishment of children? This paper chooses The Children (Equal Protection From Assault) (Scotland) Bill ( 2019) for analysis and finds that it may be that this legislation does not reduce the number of strikes against children.
