The article is devoted to the study of the process of formation of communicative competence among students of higher education. The importance of mastering communicative skills during the study of the academic discipline "Ukrainian language for professional purposes" is considered, and the necessity of implementing a number of methods and approaches to improve the communicative competence of students is argued. The course "Ukrainian language (for professional purposes)" is related to the specification of the competency requirements for language training of students of higher education. It is important to develop a set of universal stereotypes of the professional speech behaviour of the future specialist during the performance of his professional duties. The corresponding task of the teacher is to define a set of professional linguistic and communicative competences in the main types of language activities. At the same time, the application of a communicative and activity approach to the organization of the educational process ensures in this case the formation of not only language (writing documents), but also speech and communicative competences of students, and interactive tasks activate the cognitive activity of students, form the skills necessary for further raising the level speech skills. The article singles out the main approaches that help students of higher education master the communicative competences necessary for further professional activity, in particular: the use of interactive learning methods (role-playing games, case methods, brainstorming, discussions, debates, talk shows, analysis of professional texts, methods of active listening, etc.); the use of multimedia tools, Internet resources and online platforms that facilitate and accelerate the transfer of knowledge to learners, increase the productivity of both the teacher and the learner, interest students in completing tasks); individualization of the approach in teaching the Ukrainian language (taking into account the peculiarities of each student, giving the opportunity to work on specific aspects of communicative competence, taking into account gender aspects of communication).
