Significance The ruling conservative People Power Party (PPP) will take scant consolation from avoiding an opposition supermajority, as it needed a win to take control of the assembly and ensure realisation of President Yoon Suk-yeol’s policy agenda. Third parties garnered little success, with results reflecting geographical splits. Impacts The result will boost DPK leader Lee Jae-myung, who may run for president in 2027 unless convicted in an ongoing corruption case. Poor performances by new third parties, barring the RKP, mean that two-party politics will endure. Although Yoon’s domestic agenda may be stymied, foreign policy will be less affected, as the president has more autonomy over that.
