With the development of the global economy, the market has a higher demands with the talent qualities. At present, cultivating high-quality talents with innovation and entrepreneurship ability has become an important strategic task of higher education. As one of the ten key areas of manufacturing, the new material market has developed rapidly in recent years. However, some problems has been faced by the major of materials science and engineering in local applied universities in cultivating innovation and entrepreneurship ability. Problems such as imperfect teaching system, inadequate teaching ability, shortage of practical teaching resources and lack of market guidance in the training process of innovation and entrepreneurship restrict the improvement of talent innovation and entrepreneurship ability of materials science and engineering. So some reform and exploration of the talent training mode of this major has been carried out according to these problems and new material market demands, and a series of reform measures are put forward to improve the innovation and entrepreneurship ability of students majoring in materials science and engineering. Firstly, an education system aiming at improving the ability of innovation and entrepreneurship has been established. Secondly, the relevant measures which are conducive to improving the teaching ability of teachers in entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship are formulated. Thirdly, increase the input of practical teaching resources, and make full use of existing practical teaching resources. Finally, the guiding role of the market in the construction of the major is strengthened through the creation of the student training mode of the university and enterprise. These measures have effectively improved the ability of materials science and engineering majors in local applied universities to cultivate students' innovation and entrepreneurship.
