METHODS: 3 patients with renal masses who underwent pre-op renal mass biopsies and subsequent robotic partial nephrectomies were selected for this video presentation. RESULTS: Our first patient had two partial nephrectomies which were performed on separate occasions, the renal mass biopsies allowed intraop planning for successful tumor resections. Our second patient developed a perinephric hematoma after her renal mass biopsy which was discovered intraop and made the tumor resection more difficult. Our third patient developed a subcapsular hematoma that extended into the base of the tumor which caused spillage of blood products during tumor resection, making the partial nephrectomy very challenging. CONCLUSIONS: Renal mass biopsy (RMB) can be helpful in detecting malignancy (diagnostic rate>20%). However, there can be complications of RMB (11-15%). Perirenal hematoma most common (4-5%). Could add additional technical challenges to partial nephrectomy.
