METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data collected from 5/2022-9/2023 in the large, population-based RISE FOR HEALTH (RISE) cohort study. We measured the frequency of 11 LUTS (Table 1), LUTS bother, and associations with expected risk factors using the validated 10-item Lower Urinary Tract Symptom Research Network – Symptom Index (LURN SI-10), and one item on incomplete bladder emptying (from the LURN SI-29). LUTS were defined as daytime frequency >8, nocturia >2, or a response of "a few times" or more in the past week; moderate LUTS were defined as frequency >11, nocturia >3, or a response of "about half the time" or more. Degree of LUTS bother was assessed from "not at all" to "extremely." RESULTS: The mean age of the 3,364 women included in the analysis was 51.4 years (range 18-101). Participants self-identified as: Asian (5.4%), Black (12.4%), Hispanic (15%), multiracial (2.4%), other (0.9%), and White (61.3%). The prevalence of any LUTS was 79.3% and moderate LUTS was 36.4%. The median LURN SI-10 score was 4.0 (IQR: 2.0-7.8, Table 1). LUTS bother was "somewhat" or more in 38.3%. 46.1% of participants reported incontinence "a few times" or more in the past week, with stress and urgency incontinence reported with similar frequency. Overall, 72.7% of participants reported storage symptoms, 51.6% reported voiding/emptying symptoms, and 12.0% reported pain with bladder filling. Only a small percentage (7.1%) reported LUTS treatment. The LURN SI-10 demonstrated expected associations with LUTS risk factors including age, body mass index, vaginal parity, diabetes, neurologic disease, depression/anxiety, pelvic surgery, and menopausal status. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of LUTS was high in women enrolled in this population-based study, with nearly 3 in 4 women experiencing storage LUTS and half experiencing voiding/emptying LUTS. Associations with LUTS in this population were consistent with previously reported risk factors for LUTS. Despite LUTS bother in more than a third of participants, LUTS treatment was low.
