In this paper, a new high-gain compact microstrip antenna array is designed for 5G communication systems. The antenna is composed of a new slots-based radiating patch arranged in a 4 1 array and a ground plane (first layer), foam serving as the second layer substrate, and a metasurface-based superstrate (third layer). The new angular slot triangular antenna comprises a ground plane that provides a broadband antenna. The array technique improves the gain of the antenna, while the metasurface in the superstrate further enhances the gain and bandwidth of the antenna. The total size of the antenna array is 55.7mm x 187.44mm x 6.18mm. The operating frequency of the antenna is 3.76-3.84 GHz. The simulated results demonstrate a maximum gain of 12.91 dBi at the operating frequency. A stable radiation pattern is observed in the antenna. The excellent performance of the proposed antenna makes it a viable option for 5G sub-6 GHz wireless communication systems.
