The rally had been a largely unorganized, if peaceful, affair, and notable anarchists Albert Parsons and August Spies spoke. The Chicago police had also been present, and as they attempted to disband the rally, a bomb exploded. In the ensuing mayhem, at least three protesters and seven police died, though some of the police may have perished from friendly fire. In the aftermath of the protest and bombing, Chicago police cracked down on the city's left-wing groups. Eight people were ultimately charged, and their trial attracted national and international attention. Four, including Spies and Parsons, would be executed.
