Industry 4.0, the current trend of automation and digitalization of manufacturing technologies, promises to revolutionize production systems and make them more efficient, pro-ductive, and sustainable. This paper examines pivotal industry 4.0 technologies that promise to transform manufacturing operations to be more sustainable by reducing material and energy waste and enabling circular economic flows. Specifically, the role of the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, cloud services, cybersecurity, and additive manu-facturing is discussed in relation to their sustainability benefits and implementation challenges. Policy recommendations are also provided to facilitate the adoption of industry 4.0 solutions, overcome economic barriers, develop supportive infrastructure, and nurture skill development. With proper governance, industry 4.0 can lead to the emergence of intelligent, resilient, and ecologically conscious factories of the future. This paper highlights the tremendous potential of advanced manufacturing innovations to bring industrial activities into greater harmony with environmental objectives.
