The Wakarusa Wetlands remain under threat of urban development by government and corporate interests. Projects such as the South Lawrence Trafficway, its recently proposed expansion, the New Boston Crossing threaten to harm the wetlands and obscure their crucial historical significance to Haskell Indian Nations University (HINU) and Indigenous peoples more broadly. Despite the troubled history of the wetlands and persisting contention regarding new development projects, less is known about local perceptions of these issues. This work takes a first step toward understanding what Lawrence, KS community members think about the idea of continued development into the Wakarusa Wetlands.
