The urban chaos of cars and crowds, and the dearth of open, natural spaces have never really felt like home: "Etsi says this is not our rhythm. " After saying goodbye to their house, the two pack into a car on a new path, crossing mountains, deserts, and lakes as they head to the Cherokee Reservation. On their ancestors' land, they are warmly greeted by family and community alike who help them unpack, and then the girl is off to explore the forest with new friends as the adults prepare a community meal. Sorell's minimal but resonant text speaks from an authentically childlike voice, with short sentences that communicate the girl's thoughts on the journey. References to music terms like tempo and beat describe her feelings of realizing harmony with her community and the wider world. Goade's blend of media is beautiful, with the cool jewel tones of the city giving way to gentler, bright greens and browns as mother and daughter return to a place that embraces them fully. Luminous pink accents highlight that transition as hand-drawn animals, flowers, and stars flow rightward across each spread, implied to be drawn by the girl herself by one spread where she maps out their journey in a journal. And once they arrive at the reservation, the pink permeates every aspect of the natural world to a showstopping final sunset as the moon rises into the inky sky. While this will especially resonate with Indigenous children considering their heritage, the thoughtful text and beautiful visuals will engage any kid in contemplating what it means to be at home.
