The energy on the page, however, is calm as both girl and mother's serene faces turn to a sun-haloed mountain in the distance. "Mamãe says saudade is a strong longing for something you can't have, " the girl says, and her mother gives examples of saudade as they hike: it is the smell of her own mother's perfume, the sensation of ocean breeze when nowhere near an ocean, sitting with cousins beneath a jabuticaba, or swimming beneath waterfalls. It is a longing that Crespo and Ceolin manage to evoke powerfully both via text and illustration, with the memories specific and the illustrations lively with watercolor-like vistas. The present moments are as beautiful and vivid as the curlicue-edged cherished memories the pair yearn for, and older readers may recognize that this trek will one day become its own example of saudade. The narrative doesn't shy away from the bittersweetness, acknowledging saudade can feel like a blister after a hike, but "no matter how much it hurts, the memories are always worth it. " This makes an excellent fit into SEL lessons, expanding emotional vocabulary and exploring the way languages can broaden and enrich our inner lives.
