The article examines the mechanism of applying special medical and social measures to convicts with drug addiction. Based on the analysis of the current Russian legislation, as well as the legislation of a number of foreign countries, the author comes to the conclusion that there are currently many gaps in the application of the institute under study. Changes of a theoretical and practical nature are proposed, consisting in improving the conceptual apparatus by introducing the terms voluntary, compulsory and compulsory treatment for drug addiction, as well as special norms in the Federal Law "On Probation in the Russian Federation".
